There's something special about Atlanta. It's a city where music, art, food, and neighbourhood culture have always found ways to come together. And in its historic West End, a coffee roastery called Portrait Coffee has been quietly adding its own flavour to the mix.

Founded in 2019 by a group of coffee enthusiasts including John Onwuchekwa and Aaron Fender, Portrait began with a question: why were so many of the people who shaped coffee's history missing from the modern picture of specialty coffee?
Coffee's origins can be traced to Africa, yet the people and communities connected to that history have often received little recognition in the industry. The founders wanted to bring those stories back into focus, while creating new opportunities in their own neighbourhood.
Even the name Portrait carries that idea. As the brand puts it:
"Join us in pouring a new narrative."
And they've been doing just that, one cup at a time.

Portrait's coffees reflect the people and culture that inspire the team. Its signature blends carry names such as Toni, Barry, and Stacey, paying tribute to influential Black figures in literature, film, and public life. For Portrait, coffee is as much about the stories surrounding it as the flavours in the cup.
Co-founder John Onwuchekwa once described what he loved about coffee: its potential to become "a platform to do good."
That spirit has stayed with Portrait as the brand has grown, bringing specialty coffee, creativity, and community together in Atlanta's West End.
Now, imagine taking that same spirit, adding a little Southern Hip-Hop, a splash of science fiction, and sending the whole thing into orbit.
Enter OutKast.

The legendary Atlanta duo, André 3000 and Big Boi, helped introduce the world to a new sound coming out of the American South. Their 1996 album ATLiens mixed imaginative storytelling, futuristic imagery, and unmistakable Atlanta character, creating a universe that still feels wonderfully strange three decades later.
The album's title itself is a playful combination of ATL, the familiar abbreviation for Atlanta, and aliens. It captures something that OutKast understood particularly well: the freedom to embrace being different while remaining deeply connected to where you come from.
Thirty years later, Portrait Coffee has found a delicious way to revisit that universe.
In 2026, Portrait and OutKast came together for an official limited-edition collaboration celebrating the 30th anniversary of ATLiens. The collection followed their earlier partnership commemorating 25 years of Stankonia, another landmark OutKast record.

The new release takes the album's extraterrestrial imagination quite literally. The packaging features alien-inspired graphics, radar imagery, and playful references to interplanetary travel, turning an ordinary coffee bag into something that might have arrived from a distant galaxy.
Portrait introduces the collection with a suitably intergalactic greeting:
"Greetings, earthlings."
Fortunately, the coffee itself is very much from Earth.
Produced in Colombia by Sebastián Ramírez through the Young Producers Program, the limited-edition release uses an experimental peach co-fermentation process. Peaches join the coffee during fermentation, creating a cup with tasting notes of peach, brown sugar, and sweet tea.
It's a particularly clever nod to Georgia, the Peach State and OutKast's home. A Colombian coffee, a Southern flavour, and an Atlanta musical legend, all finding their way into the same bag.
There is something delightful about a collaboration that feels so naturally connected to the people behind it.
Both Portrait Coffee and OutKast have strong ties to Atlanta. Both have helped bring new perspectives to their respective worlds. And both understand that where you come from can be an endless source of creative inspiration.

The ATLiens collection brings those shared roots to life through coffee, music, and design. Alongside the limited-edition beans, Portrait has introduced themed mugs, apparel, and drinkware, giving fans a few more ways to bring this little universe into their everyday lives.
We recently had the pleasure of capturing the production of Portrait Coffee's packaging at Holden Pak's factory, watching the colourful artwork take shape on the printing line. It's always exciting to see a creative idea make its way into something people can hold, open, and enjoy.

After all, a great coffee bag can carry more than beans. Sometimes it carries a little history, a familiar hometown, and a few stories worth sharing.
For Portrait Coffee, those stories begin in Atlanta's West End. For OutKast, they've travelled around the world and, at least in imagination, far beyond it.
Thirty years after ATLiens first landed, the music is still playing, the coffee is freshly roasted, and Atlanta has another story to tell.
Somewhere out there, even the aliens might be brewing a cup.
